Vince Young Victory Month: Evaluating Vince Young’s play against the Cardinals

Vince Young on the run, yet his eyes are downfield. I love to see that.

Vince Young on the run, yet his eyes are downfield. I love to see that.

Where to start. He was awesome. Let me just jump on in:

Impressed with:

  • Command of the Offense: It’s extremely impressive. It shows through every week. He knows exactly where to go with the ball and just as importantly, where not to go with the ball. Another game with no interceptions.
  • Lack of turnovers: It was my biggest concern with him coming back. I never doubted his talent, arm strength, and ability. I always doubted his decision-making and penchant for turnovers. He’s had 1 turnover in 5 games as a starter. That’s impressive. I am loving it.
  • Able to throw when the defense knew he was throwing: Finally, a game in which everybody knew he’d half to throw the ball. What does he do? 387 yards. No Interceptions. That’s huge.
  • Deep Ball Accuracy: Every game he throws 2 to 3 deep balls that are just gorgeous. Sadly, they haven’t all translated yet. Nate Washington dropped one against the Texans and Kenny Britt fumbled his away in this past game. Hopefully the Receivers will stop acting so shell shocked when a deep ball hits them in the hands.
  • Using his feet: He is no longer looking at one or two reads then tucking and running. When he uses his feet and moves, he keeps his eyes upfield until the second he crosses the line of scrimmage. It has led to some big completions. He hit Bo Scaife early in the game on a scramble, and he had several plays in the final drive by doing this.
  • The Final Drive: All of his abilities were on display in that final drive. Total command of the offense, great decision-making, and using his feet to buy time and shift the defense so as to find an open receiver. The play to Britt is the best example, but he did it 2 other times on the drive. This was all in the face against a good defense that knew he was going to have to throw the ball. I was really impressed with him (Captain Obvious here).

Posse Review: Titans vs. Cardinals Week 12

November 30th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 1 Comment | Filed in Posse Review

Oh. My. Gosh.

What a finish. That was easily the most exciting game I have ever attended live. This picture of the catch alone gets my adrenaline pumping:

I still cant believe this play happened!!

I still can't believe this play happened!!

Alright, so let’s review this game.

Reasons why the Titans Won

  • Defense: The defense didn’t play amazingly well. However, they still held a team known for putting up a lot of points to 17. It was Matt Leinart playing QB, but regardless, the Cardinals Wide Receivers are the best in the NFL and that has been the weak point of the Titans all year. Chuck Cecil adjusted by dialing up pressure when he had to. Also, Cecil knew that with Leinart the Cardinals were likely to try short and intermediate passing plays all day, so he had the coverage jump these routes a little more frequently than he could have against Kurt Warner. It was a gamble that payed off on several key 3rd downs.
  • Chris Johnson as usual: What else can be said? 18 carries for 154 yards and a touchdown. 8.5 Yards Per Carry. He continues to impress. On top of it, people are talking about how the Cardinals “limited” him, and yet he had the best yardage day for a Runningback this weekend again.
  • Vince Young turning into a true Franchise QB: So a team, despite Johnson’s gaudy numbers, found a way to force the Titans to throw way more often than they normally like to. 43 times to be exact. And so how did Vince react? 27 of 43, 387 yards and 1 TD with 0 Interceptions. And that is against a legitimate Defense. What a game from Vince. Will obviously discuss more on the post evaluating his play tomorrow, but for now, all I can say is Bravo. I’m in. He’s a franchise QB.
  • Kenny Britt: He has the potential to be the best Wide Receiver since the arrival of the Titans to Nashville. He has the sure hands that Derrick Mason did, but he is a much, much bigger big play threat and he knows how to find the weak spot in a zone and get open. That’s an underrated skill, especially for a rookie to have.

The Vince Young-Jeff Fisher Conundrum: The more Young wins, the more Fisher can’t be fired

November 25th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 7 Comments | Filed in Tennessee Titans

Earlier this season, I wrote post on why I thought firing Jeff Fisher was patently absurd. Then, the Titans went out and lost in horrible ways, including a 59-0 dismantling by a team I hate more than life itself Chick Flicks. At this point, I did an about face and wrote about how firing Jeff Fisher wasn’t really so absurd anymore. Well, this one is in a totally different tone. It’s not about whether it’s absurd, it’s about whether he can or can’t get fired. And it’s a simple relationship: the more Vince Young wins, the more Jeff Fisher can’t be fired.

Jeff Fisher cant be fired if Young keeps this up

Jeff Fisher can't be fired if Young keeps this up

Now, logically most people think Jeff Fisher played Kerry Collins 3 weeks too long and that he should be blamed, not commended, for the way he handled the Vince Young – Kerry Collins situation. I tend to blame him for it. I thought Young should’ve taken over after the Jacksonville debacle. Regardless, it doesn’t matter. If Vince Young wins, Jeff Fisher stays.

Why? Why should Fisher have a right to stay if Vince is winning? Well, it isn’t about right. It’s about stability. Vince Young is certainly winning. In the process, he has shown that he now has an amazing grasp of the Mike Heimerdinger offense. He knows the proper reads. He knows the plays. He knows this offense inside and out. He is running it beautifully. By firing Fisher, the Titans risk ALL of this.

I’m Drinking the Kool Aid: Evaluating Vince Young’s play against the Texans

November 24th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | No Comments | Filed in Tennessee Titans

Oh yeah. I’m in (for now). We do NOT need to draft a QB. Really, quickly though, i wanted to show you a good article written by Matt Bowen of the National Football Post. He says here that he taking a mea culpa on his views of Vince Young, and he even talks about the role of the Option and other creative offenses in the NFL. Good read.

Vince Young directing traffic on one of his many runs

Vince Young directing traffic on one of his many runs

Impressed with:

  • Command of the offense: Time to break out the cliches. His poise was great! He was a field general!! Gen. Vince “Stonewall” Young!! He’s just a winner!! He has “IT”! Okay I’m done. But in all seriousness, his command of the offense was AWESOME. He read the defense perfectly several times pre-snap. He made adjustments. he directed the players. He was decisive when to run. He knew where everybody was supposed to be. He was great. I was really, really impressed.
  • His accuracy: He had a couple of bad throws. It happens. But for the most part, his throws were on target and to the right receiver.
  • His humility: It’s good to see him not acting like a rock star. Some people may be annoyed by coach speak. I LOOOVE it. Shows he knows the media is stupid and if he says what he’s supposed to, they’ll build his legend for him. I totally fall for it too. KEEP IT GOING VINCE!
  • His suit: That was a bad ass suit. I want it…

Remaining Concerns:

  • Keep doing it: Keep it up. That’s all I ask.

I give his performace an A. Loved it. He played really, really well. Did all he had to, rarely made a misread. A baby. That’s right.

I am totally drinking the Kool Aid.

Posse Review: Titans vs. Texans Week 11 MNF

November 24th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | No Comments | Filed in Posse Review

VIIIIIICTOOOORRRRRYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

After listening to Texans fans talk the whole week and discuss how good their team is and how they’re ready to make the next step and go to the playoffs blah blah blah… The Titans crushed them. Humiliated them on National Television. It was GLORIOUS!

Vince Young has completely matured. Heck, check out this suit:

THAT is the suit of a winner

THAT is the suit of a winner

What a mature suit. A winner. A Quaterback.

Reasons Why the Titans Won

  • Bend but don’t Break: Our defense gave up a lot of passing yards. 305 of them. But they only let Houston score 17 points. They did what they had to do, and got the stops they needed to.
  • Defensive Line: The young guys have picked up the mantle. Haye, Hayes, Marks, Brown, Vickerson, Ford, and even Vandenbosch were getting in on the act. This was with Jason Jones out. The D-Line is key to this team, and it looks like they’ve figured out that it’s on them. Tony Brown is a BEAST. They are the key to our defense.
  • Control the Clock: The offense only scored 20 points, but I feel like they played much better than when they played the 1st game. They controlled the clock. Even when they didn’t score, they would pick up a couple 1st downs to flip field position. The offense was big.
  • Vince Young: I will once again be doing my weekly post on his play, so I will keep this to one sentence. His command of the offense is really, really impressive.
  • Chris Johnson: The guy continues to impress every week. He has turned into a true feature back. He got all the tough yards when they needed it. The Texans “contained” him to 5.2 yards a carry. Yeah, I’ll take it. What a beast.
  • Texans Miscues: Missed kicks. Steve Slaton’s drops. Not involving Andre Johnson, the one player the Titans have NO answer for, late in the game. Coaching miscues, player miscues, kicking miscues, they all happened. It’s why the Texans are the Texans. And it helped us win.

Making strides: Evaluating Vince Young’s Play against the Buffalo Bills

November 17th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 2 Comments | Filed in Tennessee Titans

So 3 weeks starting for Vince Young and the Titans have 3 wins. However, those 3 wins have come against crappy teams. And yet… This game against the Bills presented some things from Vince Young that really impressed me.

Vince Young is not only winning, but improving.
Vince Young is not only winning, but improving.

Impressed With:

  • Played well when depended on: Chris Johnson still ended up doing his thing and plus some, but early on the Bills were containing him quite well. It put the offense into some 3rd and 8’s and Vince delivered. On top of it, he hit a big play to Kenny Britt, and also found Washington for a Touchdown. If Vince doesn’t step up there early, the Bills could’ve taken a big commanding lead, which in turn would’ve curtailed the use of Chris Johnson in the running game, and would’ve made it much more difficult to win.
  • Making better reads each week: In past years, there would be a handful of plays a game where Vince’s first read would be covered, and Vince would respond by panicing and making an inexplicable throw. Not now. When his first read is covered, he is immediately looking to the checkdown and making an accurate throw, and if that isn’t there he is taking off. The decisiveness of it is impressive and good to see. He really is in full command.
  • No panic: (more…)

Posse Review: Titans vs. Bills Week 10

November 16th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 2 Comments | Filed in Posse Review

3 in a row. That’s right. The Tennessee Titans have proven to be a team of streaks. Last year, the Titans went 10-0. Then after the Steelers victory last year they lost 8 in a row. Now they have won 3 in a row. Lets hope it continues.

Washington. Washington. 620 scoring touchdowns for fun.

Washington. Washington. 6'20 scoring touchdowns for fun.

Reasons Why the Titans Won

  • Vince Young let it fly: It was obvious that early in the game the Bills were brining in 8-9 defenders into the box to try to stop Chris Johnson. While it didn’t work overall, it worked in forcing the Titans offense into some long down-and-distances. Instead of running a shotgun draw play with CJ, the Titans typical response to long down-and-distance situations, Heimerdinger let Vince throw it. And it worked. Vince converted several early 3rd downs, and then also hit Kenny Britt for a deep bomb. He also connected with Washington on a Touchdown pass. Vince ended up throwing one interception, but one is not disastrous, and he couldn’t remain perfect forever. He recovered well after that too, and continued to throw the ball with confidence. Of all three games, I am most impressed with this one from good ole Vince. With the way the defense was giving up chunks of yardage early, Vince’s play in the passing game kept the Titans ahead and kept the pressure on the Bills to keep scoring. Eventually, the Bills couldn’t keep up.
  • Monster Domination in the 4th Quarter: (more…)

Oh yeah. Go Titans. Suck it Bills. F*** you, TO.

November 15th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | No Comments | Filed in Tennessee Titans

Aww yeah!! WHAT IS UP!!!! The Titans took the 4th Quarter and made it their bitch. Chris Johnson has another freakin awesome week. Vince showed some flex with the passing game and also recovered well after a big INT.

I’m saying it again: Chris Johnson = Barry Sanders.

And TO got into whiny cry baby mode and dropped several passes late, including one Rod Hood TOOK TO THE HOUSE!!!

So, suck it TO. Suck it long. Suck it hard.

GO TITANS!!! 3 Wins in a row!!

Chris Johnson is entering into a different stratosphere of good
