Old white men will now tell Kenny Britt who his friends should be

January 21st, 2010 by Rogersworthe | 2 Comments | Filed in Media Failures

Yesterday Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean wrote this blog post about how Kenny Britt’s company is worth questioning because he bailed a friend out of jail.  This is one of my pet peeves in sports. For College and NFL Football it is almost always old white men telling young black men how to live their lives. This has the same feeling to me.

Kenny Britt did nothing wrong, which Wyatt even points out. Britt also wasn’t there when the crime was committed. All he did was bail a friend out of jail. Yes, the friend is charged with some serious crimes, but friends are friends and Kenny Britt has the money. Let’s avoid invading his privacy and let him choose to use his money and lead his life however he wants to within the confines of the law. This is a ridiculous story and ridiculous advice from people who don’t know his relationship with the man in question and how Kenny Britt grew up. It’s asinine.

5 mailed in things we know about the Titans

November 11th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | No Comments | Filed in Media Failures

As always, the Tennessean has one of the Titans beat writers do a “5 things we know about the Titans” piece nearly every week. While I don’t hate the beat writers the Titans have, they do tend to mail it in on this one article (and a few others at times). This weeks version though had one little point that made me laugh out loud:

HEIMERDINGER LOOKS LIKE HE’S HAVING FUN

He used to have a reputation for being a bit of a grouch, and he can still be cranky at times. But Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger doesn’t look like one these days, judging from his sideline interaction with quarterback Vince Young. Make no mistake: Heimerdinger and Kerry Collins get along great. But Heimerdinger seems to be enjoying the challenge of making things work with Young. It is showing on the field with some creative play-calling — and smiles — on Sundays.

Okay… I can’t help it. This makes me laugh. Just this idea that somebody would think, “Alright, what are the 5 things we definitely know to be true about the Tennessee Titans… Well… Mike Heimerdinger looks like he’s having fun!”

Also, the reasoning makes me laugh. This whole “Heimerdinger is really enjoying the challenge of making things work with Young.” Right. Because the challenge of making it work with Kerry was just too easy. They were doing so well it wasn’t even a challenge anymore. But Vince is just such a challenge that it has reignited Heimerdinger’s joy for football. In fact, he was tied for 3rd in the league last week for Coaches Smiles (a new Football Outsiders statistic). This is a huge turnaround for a coach who usually is near the bottom of the NFL in Coaches Smiles.

I really hate armchair psychology football analysis. The reason why the offense is working now is because Vince Young isn’t turning the ball over, Wide Receivers are holding on to their catches, the defense has forced some turnovers giving the offense a short field, and Chris Johnson is a monster on pace for 1,900 yards. It’s not because Heimerdinger is magically re-energized by the challenge of molding Vince Young into a good QB. It really is as simple as turnovers. Last year the Titans were 13-3 when Collins protected the football. They were 0-6 when he didn’t. With Vince, his QB rating is over 100 and he looks like the QB of the future when he doesn’t turn the ball over, and he looks like a disaster who is a huge draft bust when he does turn the ball over.

That’s it.

Surprise! Bud Adams wants Vince Young to start

October 27th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 3 Comments | Filed in Tennessee Titans

HEY!! LOOK!!! Bud Adams wants Vince Young to start!! He just said it!!!… a week ago.

This annoys the shit out of me. Adams doesn’t see Vince in practice. He doesn’t see him in film study. He probably doesn’t even talk to Vince that often. He’s 86 years old. Yet he knows who should start?

This won’t end well with Vince. When the owner starts dictating from on high it rarely, if ever, ends well.

And don’t cite 2006. How’d that work out for Vince long term? Think he could’ve used some more time for development and not have as much pressure on him? Think that might have helped a bit?

Vince is being set up to fail again... and he will.

Kerry Collins is still expecting to be the starter? WTF?

October 22nd, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 3 Comments | Filed in Tennessee Titans

Kerry Collins has told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean that he still expects to be the starter coming out of the bye week. The question I first think of is, “Why?” Here are the reasons, none that I agree with, I would see as reasons why Collins would remain the starter:

  1. Vince Young is that bad in practice. He would have to be horrendous not to start at this point, and so I have to wonder if this is true.
  2. Fisher feels there hasn’t been an attitude adjustment. The guy still listens to his iPod on the sidelines like a moron. Whether they should or not, coaches look into things like that.
  3. They already know they are going to cut him at the end of the year no matter what, so they won’t play him just to make sure he doesn’t end up playing well and getting the fanbase behind him.
  4. Fisher feels Collins gives them the best chance to win and wants to get one win out of the way before the switch to make sure that he isn’t the second coach to finish 0-16. This is a reach, but who knows?

These are the only reasons I can think of as to why Kerry would still be the starter coming out of the Bye week. I don’t get it… Anybody else have any other crazy ideas?

Lightspeed Links: Return Game is Fine? Really?

September 15th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | No Comments | Filed in Lightspeed Links, Tennessee Titans

The Tennessean’s Tennessee Titans blog, Titans Insider (so freakin original, I just can’t stand it) had this post on there by Jim Wyatt stating that Jeff Fisher is confident in the punt (Mouton) and kick returners (Ringer) that are already on the team.

I do not have much to say on this, as I do not have a definitive opinion on Byron Mouton as a punt returner. All I really have to say is:

Man, I hope he is right, or we’re fucked.

Preseason Impressions

August 31st, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 3 Comments | Filed in Tennessee Titans

So we have had 3 1/2 games of preseason football to date, with one more left at Green Bay. The game against Cleveland brought some clarification to some issues we have had in previous games. However, it’s still preseason, the Detroit Lions went 4-0 in preseason last year, so all of these need to be taken with a grain of salt. But here are my thoughts so far on our preseason play:

  • Our offense is going to be good: Even when the 1st team offense struggled in the Tampa Bay and Dallas Cowboys game, you could see it forming. Justin Gage is on a new level, and Nate Washington adds a deep threat dimension that is very real and defenses fear it. This is going to open up the middle of the field for the deepest Tight End position in the league. Also, Kenny Britt as the #3 receiver is perfect for him and he will fill the role well. I am impressed with our offense. Which we will need this year because
  • Our defense will be good, but not dominant: The Defensive line will have its moments, and Jason Jones may add A LOT of what I feel is missing (which is why these should be taken with a grain of salt), but I don’t think we will dominate on the Line like in past years. Nobody commands a double team, which gives opposing offenses some flexibility in how to use their line in pass protection. Also, the more I see our non-pro bowlers in the secondary play, the worse I feel. Teams obviously see Faggins as a HUGE liability and are going right after him (he did get cut from HOUSTON for goodness sake). Fuller is good, but not as good as I was hoping he would be. And Mouton is injured and not getting any reps after showing some promise. The good thing is Tulloch looks like he is taking a step up and Fowler is no slouch as a fill-in/back up.
  • Vince Young ain’t turning the proverbial corner, so shut the fuck up about it: He sucks. He sucks trying to run. He sucks at passing. He sucks at reading defenses. He sucks at professional football. He is Tommy Frazier. The Tennessean and commenters everywhere are saying things like “Well he looked GREAT after throwing that interception for a touchdown!!! It’s important for a Quarterback to recover after errors like that!” IT’S IMPORTANT NOT TO HAVE ERRORS LIKE THAT!!!!!!!!!! GET A BRAIN!!!! It’s year 4 (I kept thinking 3 for some reason earlier today on MCM) and we are trying to say things like “Well, he finally is going through his progressions!” Big. Fat. FAIL. Last night he cost us 10 to 14 points (the argument can be made that if he throws the ball away on the play he made the goalline fumble that Fisher gets the kicking team out there). 10 to 14 points is the game. You cannot give NFL teams 10 to 14 points and expect to win. PERIOD. Kerry Collins doesn’t do that. He doesn’t bring much to the table, but he doesn’t GIVE the other team 10 to 14 points, and that’s why he is the starter. Vince isn’t gonna turn it around. It’s year 4, and he looks like a rookie.
Look, he got cursed in '08, he isn't going to recover. He sucks. He sucks BAD. Let it go.

Lighstspeed Links: The gauntlet has been thrown

August 13th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | No Comments | Filed in Lightspeed Links
4 scraps at practice? He must hate the defense...

Craig Stevens, the blocking Tight End for the past couple years on the Titans, has set a new record for fringe Titans players everywhere by getting into four different “scraps” with three different players. I wonder if Keith Bulluck would ever be able to capture one of these on his uStream. That’d be awesome. Of course, then uStream would be banned forever, which is not awesome.

The Tennessean’s Gary Eswick and Jim Wyatt released their stock reports on a few players of interest for the Titans. No real surprises. I do wish Vickerson could handle not going offsides. Also, Lavelle Hawkins is really falling off the map in terms of value to the team. That’s really dissapointing.

Kissing Suzy Kolber reveals that Reebok is releasing a shirt with Chad OchoCinco’s favorite slogan on it. He has crossed the boundary of whimsical and funny to really freakin’ annoying. I pretty much am now in agreement with The Raging Clam on it.

Read about Donte Stallworth’s suspension, Michael Vicks jersey, and a weird picture after the jump… (more…)

Lightspeed Links: Camper Edition

July 17th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | No Comments | Filed in Lightspeed Links

Presenting the fastest links in the biz. Not quick links, LIGHTSPEED LINKS.

Alright so let’s get this party started.

Gary Estwick of the Tennesseean writes that while 90% of the 3,000 single game tickets available for sale will be sold either online or through a phone system, there are still the “Campers” who spend the night out at LP Field. He even quotes one:

“That’s the only way we do it,” William Sutton explained. Uh Will…. you don’t mind if I call you Will, right? Yeah. Will. It’s not. It’s the only STUPID way to do it. Get a life. Or a computer. Or a phone, for that matter.

These guys apparently get out there early in the week. EARLY IN THE WEEK. There was no mention of them taking off work so I assume they’re unemployed. Regardless, to camp at LP Field for a few days to get tickets when you can get them online and not have to camp? T-Rac does not approve. And he eats trash. (more…)
