5 Things we Know about the Titans: Bye Week Edition

October 26th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | No Comments | Filed in Tennessee Titans

So, a wonderful football weekend took place. Why was it so wonderful? The Titans didn’t lose. SWEET!! Felt so good not to lose. So, after much contemplation, I’ve decided to steal the schtick of… every crappy sportswriter ever. Here are the five things we know about the Tennessee Titans coming out of the Bye Week:

  1. Jeff Fisher likes Peyton Manning.
  2. The Titans haven’t won a game since stomping the terrible towel (thanks for not shutting the fuck up Steelers fans).
  3. Kerry Collins is old.
  4. Vince Young can’t win the starting job back.
  5. The Titans have used their Bye Week.

There it is. The five things we know about the Tennessee Titans coming out of the Week 7 Bye. GO TITANS!

Kerry Collins is still expecting to be the starter? WTF?

October 22nd, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 3 Comments | Filed in Tennessee Titans

Kerry Collins has told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean that he still expects to be the starter coming out of the bye week. The question I first think of is, “Why?” Here are the reasons, none that I agree with, I would see as reasons why Collins would remain the starter:

  1. Vince Young is that bad in practice. He would have to be horrendous not to start at this point, and so I have to wonder if this is true.
  2. Fisher feels there hasn’t been an attitude adjustment. The guy still listens to his iPod on the sidelines like a moron. Whether they should or not, coaches look into things like that.
  3. They already know they are going to cut him at the end of the year no matter what, so they won’t play him just to make sure he doesn’t end up playing well and getting the fanbase behind him.
  4. Fisher feels Collins gives them the best chance to win and wants to get one win out of the way before the switch to make sure that he isn’t the second coach to finish 0-16. This is a reach, but who knows?

These are the only reasons I can think of as to why Kerry would still be the starter coming out of the Bye week. I don’t get it… Anybody else have any other crazy ideas?

Fire Jeff Fisher? Not so absurd anymore…

October 21st, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 2 Comments | Filed in Tennessee Titans

It is amazing what 59-0 will do. I decided after that debacle to give myself a couple days and get over the shock of it. Well, here I am a few days later and… I have changed my mind. If the season ended today I think Jeff Fisher should be fired. Hack, the official T-Rac’s Posse critic, was waiting to see how I would spin this in Fisher’s favor since I had chosen his side two weeks ago. Well… I am not spinning it for Fisher. I am changing my mind. The situation has changed, and in my opinion rather significantly. I defended him 2 weeks ago based on the good faith that he would find a way to turn this season around and adjust to the problems that Titans had and make this team competitive. That obviously didn’t happen.

59-0 is tied for the worst loss in NFL history. It could have been worse had Belichick kept his foot on the gas pedal. It is a punchline. A joke. The media laughs, the players feel angry and ashamed, and fans lose all confidence in the team’s leadership. Combine that with 0-6 on a year with Super Bowl aspirations, and this season has just entered into a level of complete and total disaster I could never have imagined happening. 59-0 really changed my perspective on Jeff Fisher.

Unless things drastically change, its time to move on.

Unless things drastically change, it's time to move on.

Why things change after 59-0

When I defended Jeff Fisher about two weeks ago, I said he was a top 10 coach who has a history of being able to build winning teams and that the lack of a franchise Quarterback can rarely be pinned on the coach’s shoulders. I still believe that to be true. The past decade, he has been a top 10 coach, and he deserves a lot of respect and credit for those 10 years.I also pointed out the lack of good replacement candidates for the job, and how lack of stability in the NFL is one way to completely drive a team into the ground. All of these things remain true. But 59-0 also brings up new concerns, both short and long term. The credibility of the team is completely in question, and that falls on the head coach. Here are my thoughts on why I changed my mind on Jeff Fisher after one horrendous game:

  1. It shows not only a lack of improvement, but a complete nosedive the other way. Jeff Fisher usually is very good at maximizing the talent given to him and also finding ways to be competitive and win a few games with subpar talent. While one season or game does not a coach make, a 59-0 loss shows that there is a severe lack of focus and severe disconnect on this team. Something is extremely wrong, and Fisher is making it worse. Much worse. That’s a bad sign.

Posse Review: Titans vs. Patriots Week 6

October 19th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | No Comments | Filed in Posse Review

This was, by far, the worst game of football I have ever witnessed. EVER.

Captain Douche destroyed my team... so much pain...

Captain Douche destroyed my team... so much pain...

This, obviously, is the worst Titans team ever. The team has a horrible mix of old, useless veterans and young rookies who are not ready for NFL competition. This game reflected that in every way it could.

Defense

Holy shit. 59 points. I know that the team was trotting out 3 Rookie CBs, but regardless, at SOME POINT in that onslaught in the 2nd Quarter, did anybody think, “You know, maybe instead of running the same busted scheme that has been KILLING us all season, lets blitz the ever living shit out of these assholes and see if maybe we can make a play in the snow. If they complete a pass for a bunch of yards, who gives a fuck? They’re doing that anyways.” Anybody think that? ANYBODY???

Obviously the Titans don’t have the talent to have a top defense. But I really think the defensive scheme being used right now might be the worst defensive scheme to use for the Titans current defensive personnel. How they keep trotting out 4 rushers and 7 in coverage week after week after week and accept getting COMPLETELY torched is beyond me. Some severe disconnect is going on.

If Vince Young plays, hold back on expectations

October 13th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | No Comments | Filed in Tennessee Titans

I have called for Vince Young to play for roughly two weeks. Kerry Collins has been really, really bad. As stated before, I understood why Coach Fisher stuck by McNair earlier this decade. He was the Quarterback of the future and at some point if you believe a talent will develop you have to stand by him through hard times. However, I do not get what he is standing by now by sticking with Collins. Kerry is not the QB of the future, and apparently he is not the QB of the present. However, if Vince does play, what should we expect?

Ah yes... that famous throwing motion that pushed the limits of my sanity in 2007

Ah yes... that famous throwing motion that pushed the limits of my sanity in 2007

My answer? Not much.

Kerry Collins has been bad. Really bad. This has been well documented everywhere. But he isn’t any worse of a passer than Vince Young was in 2007.

So, based on what we’ve seen in the preseason and his past play along with Jeff Fisher’s reluctance to play him (he is one of the few who sees him in practice every day), I wouldn’t expect much more than Vince Young to be Kerry Collins with a few extra first downs picked up on scrambles. Until he proves otherwise, we need to hold back on the expectations on Vince.

Posse Review: Titans vs. Colts Week 5

October 12th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | No Comments | Filed in Posse Review

Well…. at least this loss was expected. However, it was still frustrating and very disappointing. This team is very bad and not going anywhere.

Griffin has had this view of Receivers all freaking year

Griffin has had this view of Receivers all freaking year

Permanent Problems

  • Quarterback: I understood the loyalty to McNair back in the O’Donnell days, but I do not understand the loyalty to Collins now. He isn’t the QB of the future and he isn’t the QB of the present either. How many losses before Fisher figures the Titans have blown enough games to just play for next year?
  • Secondary: This was to be expected so I won’t say much on it. However, I still don’t understand what has happened to Michael Griffin.
  • Mike Heimerdinger: I still fail to see where he is taking this offense. Most talent ever yet way less production. He can’t seem to get in his head Lendale needs the ball more. All signs point to it. The Colts defense is fast, but has been proven to to give up big yards from punishing runningbacks who run North and South very well. THAT’S LENDALE WHITE YOU DOUCHE BAG!!!! FIGURE IT OUT!!! HOLY CRAP YOU ARE DUMB!!!!
  • Stupid play: It’s become a pattern. A bad, bad pattern. Every time the Titans get a chance to take a lead, tie a game, or even bring a game close, they get a turnover. How does this continually happen? At some point, it isn’t just bad luck anymore.

My Doghouse

  • Nobody makes my doghouse, because at this point, everything just feels like a permanent problem.
  • How the hell does Lendale not get the ball on 3rd and 1? How? HOW??? HOW!?!?!?! I WILL WATERBOARD HEIMERDINGER FOR ANSWERS IF I HAVE TO!!!!

A Few good things

  • Rob Bironas: At least he is back.

I think, as did many other Titans fans, that this game was going to be a loss after that Alge Crumpler fumble. The defense held Peyton Manning, the Titans get the ball, look crisp on offense, Collins is throwing good passes, then Crumpler fumbles and Peyton starts a few yards outside the Red Zone and does what he does there: scores a Touchdown. It killed the chances for the Titans to play downhill, run the ball, kill clock, and NOT PLAY FROM BEHIND. The Titans haven’t been able to play ahead this season due to the pass defense, but also due to untimely turnovers. At some point, when it happens over and over, it is more than luck. I don’t know what it is because it’s a different type of turnover every time. A fumble, a muffed kickoff, an Interception, muffed punt, fumble again, and probably something next week. I don’t know.  But whatever it is, the Titans need to get it under control, or winning a game will be a long time coming.

T-Rac’s Fake Mailbag: 0-4 Edition

October 5th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 7 Comments | Filed in T-Rac's Mailbag

So I have a few scattered thoughts about the Tennessee Titans and their 0-4 season and the direction of the organization. However, I could not think of a way to get all these thoughts into one post, and most were too short to make a post on their own. So, I did what any sane person would do: I email the questions to myself from fake email addresses with fake names, drink a bottle of rubbing alcohol, then I open my email and VOILA! All of a sudden I have all these emails from people asking questions about the Titans! So I make a mailbag post and answer the questions in these emails from “real” people.

Rogersworthe,

Why is Jeff Fisher sticking with Kerry Collins? And do you think he would have stuck by Vince if Vince had been 0-4? Also what is your ASL?

~Super Hot Amber

Good questions Amber! Let me throw you my genius thoughts on it. Fisher has always been loyal to his starting QB. I believe he will publicly say Collins is the starter until the second Vince Young is put in a game. It’s how Jeff Fisher has always operated. This means though that we the fans have no idea when Vince Young will be coming in, and that is rather frustrating. I personally think Vince should be in now, however Fisher will probably start Collins into the bye week.

Now to your second question, I have seen this in a lot of places. There is a lot inferred in the question, and I believe most of the inference is towards racism. I disagree with this sentiment. Fisher stuck by McNair when McNair struggled and O’Donnel filled in and played well. Many, many, many people in Nashville were calling for O’Donnel to be the starter and to declare McNair a big, fat bust and Fisher refused to and stuck by McNair. So, please take the inferred racism elsewhere.

As for my asl, I’m a 53/f/MI.

T-Rac,

What should this team do for the future if we go 4-12?

Posse Review: Titans vs. Jaguars Week 4

October 5th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 2 Comments | Filed in Posse Review
One of a few bright spots was Kenny Britt stepping up

One of a few bright spots was Kenny Britt stepping up

Well, this loss was not so much a gut punch. This loss was more of a prison rape. The Titans were down 27-3 at halftime. The Titans are 1-7 in their last 8 games. 1-7. You know who is 1-7 in their last 8 games? Detroit. Who else? The Rams. Then the Titans. I have come to a painful conclusion this week. The past few weeks I kept arguing the Titans were an adjustment or two away from returning to form and smacking teams down. I was wrong. The Titans are a bad football team. The Kansas City Chiefs played teams tough last year several times. Nobody claimed they were a few adjustments away from being a playoff team. Why are they this bad after being 10-0 last year? No idea. Quarterback play is a big part of it. The loss of Haynesworth also shows how tenuously balanced top units, offense or defense, can be. Take Drew Brees out of the Saints offense and Robert Meachem is no longer a decent 3rd Receiver. Consider Nick Harper our Robert Meachem. Time to retire, Nick.

Permanent Problems

  • Quarterback: Kerry Collins has been all kinds of bad, and this game takes the cake. The interceptions were unforced. Jacksonville didn’t get any sort of world class pressure either, but there was Collins under and overthrowing everything. Is Vince Young the answer? Doubtful. But it is time to find out once and for all. Time to bench Collins.
  • Secondary: Atrocious in every way. Michael Griffin is highly overrated as a safety. He plays too wildly and gambles too much. These look good when there is a lot of pressure on the QB and he has to go with his first read and never has time to set up pump fakes and looking the safety off, but now that QBs do, it has left Michael Griffin exposed. Chris Hope, I don’t know what happened to him, but he is not the same this year. He seems a step too late everywhere on the field.
  • Mike Heimerdinger: His offensive gameplans have been a joke. This past week alone yielded 48 passes to 18 runs. That is ridiculous. He is to blame as much for the offenses failure as Kerry Collins, if not more so.

My Doghouse (more…)
