The statistical greatness of Chris Johnson

December 3rd, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 1 Comment | Filed in Tennessee Titans

Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders wrote this piece for ESPN Insider in which he outlines the amazingness that is the statistics Chris Johnson leaves behind. If you have ESPN Insider, please go read it. It’s awesome. However, if you don’t, I will highlight some of the amazing stats for you:

  • Football Outsiders project him to average 5.3 yards per carry for his career. That’s unbelievable. That would be the record for any Runningback ever.
  • Direct quote: “When a back runs for three, five or even eight yards, he usually owes the lion’s share of credit to his offensive line. But once a back reaches the second level — 10 yards and beyond — any additional ground gained is primarily a function of his speed, vision and agility. So it’s another testament to Johnson’s greatness that 39% of the Titans’ rushing yards this season have been compiled past the second level. That’s nearly double the 20% NFL average, and it’s on pace to break the Lions’ 38% record, set by Barry Sanders & Co. in 1997.”
  • Okay, I am using this bullet point to highlight the one above. 39%!!!! The average is 20%. That is insane.
  • Finally, Football Outsiders show that on their Speed Score chart, which is a combination of a players’ weight and 40 time, Chris Johnson not only scores the highest among the draft class of 2008, but among active pro bowlers and this years likely pro bowlers.
  • The piece didn’t mention this, but I will. This year Chris Johnson has 3 Touchdown runs of over 85 yards. No other Runningback has ever done that in his CAREER. The closest is Bo Jackson, who has 3 runs of over 85 yards, but one did not go for a Touchdown.
  • And finally (also not in the piece but I am mentioning it), Chris Johnson is outrushing 23 NFL teams by himself. At 1,396 yards that is more than 23 other TEAMS.

The lesson is, as always: Chris Johnson is awesome.

August 27th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | 1 Comment | Filed in PosseCasts

I am joined by fellow writers Lando and the Raging Clam to discuss the NFC division by division. About midway through, Andrew makes a fashionably late entrance to add his thoughts on the NFC as well. Mainly we discussed 3 divisions then incessantly mocked the NFC West. Rather fun. So take a listen and don’t forget to subscribe to our feed so as to get all future PosseCasts as well.
