Posse Review: Super Bowl 44 – Colts vs. Saints

WHAAAA!?!?!?! This is so great. Peyton Manning, the man who could have solidified his position as the greatest Quarterback ever, and in one game he finds a way to move himself back a spot. EVERYBODY is ripping him. I couldn’t have imagined a better outcome. Let me take you through the emotional rollercoaster that was my manic thought process throughout the game:

1st Quarter: Colts 10 Saints 0. Peyton Looked awesome, and I was pissed that on 3rd and 2 the Saints went deep. Cost them a drive and it looked like this game was headed for blowout central. Anybody else dread this could finish with the Colts winning by 20+ after the 1st Quarter? I did.

He looked unstoppable in the 1st Quarter and I felt sick.

2nd Quarter: Saints 6 Colts 0. Talk about ball control!! The Saints had 26 of the 32 final plays of the 2nd half… but they couldn’t score touchdowns. When the Saints got stuffed on that 4th and goal, I was convinced, even while the got the ball back and kicked a field goal, that they were in some serious trouble. YOU GOTTA SCORE TOUCHDOWNS AGAINST THE COLTS!!! Oh man. I was convinced the Colts had this in the bag. And then…

3rd Quarter: Saints 10 Colts 7. ONSIDE KICK!!! HOLY SHIT!!!! WHAT IS GOING ON!!! ARE THE SAINTS GONNA WIN??? THIS IS AWESOME!!!! I did a complete about face and thought the Saints were going to win this game.

Posse Review: 2010 Playoffs Divisional Round

Overall, another pretty boring weekend of football. That theme is getting a little old. However, one good thing from the weekend is the fact that the mythical idea of “momentum” was proven to be, well, mythical. Also, the idea that resting your starters can hurt you was brutally murdered (the Norv Turner exception applies here). Anyways, lets recap this bitch.

Arizona Cardinals vs. New Orleans Saints: The overturning of the retarded idea that resting your starters is bad began quite early and was continually hammered throughout this game. New Orleans offense had looked stagnant for roughly a month and analysts everywhere were saying New Orleans had “peaked” at the wrong time and that they were toast because they had no momentum. 21 points in the first quarter. 45-14. Defense SHUT DOWN Larry Fitzgerald. WHO ELSE HAS EVER DONE THAT!!?? New Orleans looks really, really good. Super Bowl good. And I am on their bandwagon for the playoffs. WHO DAT!!!

Baltimore Ravens vs. Indianapolis Colts: Ravens actually had a very good, very effective defensive gameplan. They had the EXACT OPPOSITE on offense. I don’t even know what they were trying to do on offense. They rarely tried to just overpower the Colts D, which they are extremely capable of doing, and kept trying to run outside, run screens, and run anything that plays right into the strengths of the Colts defense. Predictably, it didn’t work and Joe Flacco looks worse now then he did last year. Frankly, that makes me really happy.

Posse Review: Wild Card Weekend

Overall, Wild Card Weekend was kinda boring, but there were some highlights that made the weekend worth it. And the final game of the weekend, Green Bay vs. Arizona, turned out to be epic. Lets review:

Cincinnati Bengals vs. New York Jets: GAAAH this game was BOOORING! Carson Palmer couldn’t hit a stationary elephant, much less a moving Wide Receiver. Mark Sanchez threw 15 passes. Essentially it was like what I imagined watching Iowa vs. Georgia Tech would’ve been like had I been dumb enough to watch the Orange Bowl. The Jets are going to get their asses handed to them by the Chargers.

Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles: This game was a bit more exciting, but it still wasn’t as good as I was hoping. It became very obvious very early in the game that the Cowboys are just a lot better than the Eagles. The Cowboys pass rush is unreal, and the Eagles did absolutely nothing to try to nullify it. Jason Peters, a legit Pro Bowl left tackle, had to line up and try to defend Demarcus Ware 50 times with Ware knowing that there wasn’t a chance it hell it was a running play. We saw what happened with that. Honestly, I think Dallas is going to beat Minnesota.

Posse Review: Titans vs. Chargers Week 16

As a fan, I could think of more fitting ends to the Titans season to fit my needs. But for a reality check for fans, I can’t. The reality is that the Titans aren’t an elite team. They are perfectly average. They have some talent, they aren’t a disaster, but they aren’t beating any good teams. At least not consistently. This game made me realize this: the 2009 Titans weren’t going anywhere.

Why the Titans lost

  • The defense had no shot: Going into this game, it was obvious that with the amount of injuries to key players on the Titans already mediocre defense that if San Diego was going to score less than 30, they’d have to beat themselves. They didn’t, and they killed the Titans weak defense. There just wasn’t a chance. All of their receivers from every position were bigger, stronger, and faster than the players the Titans had to match them up with. There isn’t a Defensive Coordinator in the history of the NFL that could’ve taken what the Titans marched out there and shut down the Chargers offense.

Posse Review: Titans vs. Dolphins Week 15

Ugly, ugly win. I wouldn’t say the Titans didn’t deserve it, for they did score 24 points in regulation and they lost the coin toss for Overtime. But for the Titans to give up an 18 point comeback like THAT… Not pretty. Fisher and Heimerdinger went too conservative WAY too soon and also acted like they had a great defense backing their ploy up when the OPPOSITE is true. Anyways, without further adieu, I give you the review.

Why the Titans Won

  • Chris Johnson: He continues to be a rock. Even in a game with “limited” production he finished with 159 total yards of offense. The Dolphins somewhat limited his big plays, especially rushing, yet the final statline is still extremely good. Johnson may be boom and bust in his style, but he no longer is boom and bust from game to game. He gets the Titans a lot of yards while opening up the rest of the offense.
  • Vince Young: When the playcalling wasn’t stupidly conservative and he was allowed to run the offense to its full capacity, he played quite well. His one interception was not really his fault, and he was not gun shy after it. His 3 touchdown passes, 2 to Gage and 1 to Washington, were long and accurate. He also broke one rush and several times used his feet to avoid sacks and find throwing lanes to hit receivers.
  • Won the Turnover battle: In several ways. They gave up less than they got, but they also capitalized off of the Dolphins turnovers more than the Dolphins capitalized off the Titans turnovers. After the opening interception, the Dolphins had a chance to deflate the Titans with a touchdown. However, the defense held and in a weird way gave the Titans a surge of momentum and a feeling of victory for the defense. The offense then kicked it into gear.
  • Explosive Offense briefly reaching full potential: Even in the NFL, speed kills. On offense, the Titans have a lot of it. Nate Washington is a very fast Wide Receiver, Chris Johnson is already recognized as the fasted player in the NFL, and Vince Young is easily the fastest starting Quarterback in the NFL. So, as we saw when the Titans scored 24 points early in the game, when Washington isn’t dropping perfectly thrown balls, Vince is throwing accurately down the field, Chris Johnson is doing what he does oh-so-well, and the play-calling matches up with the idea of “we have an explosive offense, so lets use it”, the Titans have an offense that can light up a scoreboard very quickly. The problem? Well… Nate Washington drops a lot of key passes which are usually right on target, Vince can sometimes struggle with accuracy inside the Red Zone, and Heimerdinger/Fisher many times treats the playcalling and the offense with kid gloves, as if they have a top 5 defense backing them up. The offense played great in obtaining the lead, but then the coaching staff pulled back on the reigns and backed off and it nearly cost the Titans the game. Which brings me to my next segment for this game…

Posse Review: Titans vs. Rams Week 14

What a drubbing. The game was essentially never in doubt once Chris Johnson scored his first touchdown. The only question then was, “Could Chris Johnson score 6 Touchdowns?” He got half that number and almost got a 4th. Vince Young played extremely well but ended up leaving with a hamstring injury. Kerry Collins was serviceable, but also showed why Vince is now a better Quarterback than him. So, lets move on and get to the official review:

Posse Review: Titans vs. Colts Week 13

And so it ends. The hope for a playoff spot. Peyton Manning proved to be a lot better than Nick Harper, and the Titans couldn’t find a way to disrupt him. It was a rough game to watch, and field goals proved to be the Titans response to touchdowns. That’s how this team has played against the Colts, and it’s a frustrating pattern. So without further adieu, I give you the review.

Why the Titans Lost

  • Questionable Offensive Playcalling: Heimerdinger reverted back to some tendencies from the first 6 games that infuriated me. On the first 4th and Goal the Titans went for it, the Colts called a timeout. This, obviously, gives extra time for them to think about the playcall. Apparently, that was a bad idea, because Heimerdinger got cute and called for a fade route to Kenny Britt in the corner of the end zone. Problems with this call are that 1) A fade route IN GENERAL is a LOW percentage playcall. Even if it is Manning to Wayne, Brady to Moss, Montana to Rice, Brees to Colston, IT’S STILL A LOW PERCENTAGE PLAY. I also understand the thought process. They threw a slant to Britt earlier, so the Colts defender would be jumping the slant. REGARDLESS, it’s a bad playcall. 2) Vince isn’t that strong on throwing the fade. It’s just the truth. He actually threw it decently well, but the problem is with a fade route you have to throw it PERFECTLY. No margin for error. Vince has not matured to that point yet. 3) Kenny Britt is a rookie. A good rookie? Yes. An exceptional rookie? No. He isn’t Moss, Wayne, or Rice yet, and I doubt he ever will be. Frankly the call just doesn’t make any sense the way you look at it. And that wasn’t all. Heimerdinger had several head scratchers for playcalls throughout this game, including a complete misuse of LenDale White AGAIN.
  • Nick Harper: The rest of the secondary played decently well. Not great by any means, but they did what they could considering it is Peyton Manning. Reggie Wayne was all but taken out of the game. BUT… Pierre Garcon continually torched the Titans secondary, and every time he seemed to get a big play, NICK HARPER was in on the coverage. It was painful to watch, and at SOME POINT Fisher has GOT to put Rod Hood in. Doesn’t he? Eventually? It is killing the Titans. The Fisher loyalty to veterans is starting to become a mockery.
  • Turnovers: It’s hard to chastise Vince too much for his interception. The game was getting out of hand, the Titans needed a play, and Kenny Britt broke off the route just as he threw. Now while I doubt that would’ve changed the outcome (it wasn’t a good throw), you never know. Maybe Britt breaks it up, maybe the defender doesn’t catch it, maybe Britt finds a way to catch it. Who knows? That one in that situation has happened to every Quarterback worth his salt. In the 1st Quarter tied at 0-0 or a close game, and Vince throws it away. He tried to make a play in a situation where nothing was developing but the Titans needed a play desperately. The fumble by Ahmard Hall was infuriating, but with Ahmard it’s a risk. It was a good play call, good execution, good run by Hall and then he put the ball on the ground. Unfortunately two very forgivable turnovers produced a very unforgivable situation  of losing the turnover battle to the Colts by 2. Very few, if any, teams would beat Indianapolis when down 2 in the turnover column.

Posse Review: Titans vs. Cardinals Week 12

Oh. My. Gosh.

What a finish. That was easily the most exciting game I have ever attended live. This picture of the catch alone gets my adrenaline pumping:

Alright, so let’s review this game.

Reasons why the Titans Won

  • Defense: The defense didn’t play amazingly well. However, they still held a team known for putting up a lot of points to 17. It was Matt Leinart playing QB, but regardless, the Cardinals Wide Receivers are the best in the NFL and that has been the weak point of the Titans all year. Chuck Cecil adjusted by dialing up pressure when he had to. Also, Cecil knew that with Leinart the Cardinals were likely to try short and intermediate passing plays all day, so he had the coverage jump these routes a little more frequently than he could have against Kurt Warner. It was a gamble that payed off on several key 3rd downs.
  • Chris Johnson as usual: What else can be said? 18 carries for 154 yards and a touchdown. 8.5 Yards Per Carry. He continues to impress. On top of it, people are talking about how the Cardinals “limited” him, and yet he had the best yardage day for a Runningback this weekend again.
  • Vince Young turning into a true Franchise QB: So a team, despite Johnson’s gaudy numbers, found a way to force the Titans to throw way more often than they normally like to. 43 times to be exact. And so how did Vince react? 27 of 43, 387 yards and 1 TD with 0 Interceptions. And that is against a legitimate Defense. What a game from Vince. Will obviously discuss more on the post evaluating his play tomorrow, but for now, all I can say is Bravo. I’m in. He’s a franchise QB.
  • Kenny Britt: He has the potential to be the best Wide Receiver since the arrival of the Titans to Nashville. He has the sure hands that Derrick Mason did, but he is a much, much bigger big play threat and he knows how to find the weak spot in a zone and get open. That’s an underrated skill, especially for a rookie to have.

Posse Review: Titans vs. Texans Week 11 MNF

VIIIIIICTOOOORRRRRYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

After listening to Texans fans talk the whole week and discuss how good their team is and how they’re ready to make the next step and go to the playoffs blah blah blah… The Titans crushed them. Humiliated them on National Television. It was GLORIOUS!

Reasons Why the Titans Won

  • Bend but don’t Break: Our defense gave up a lot of passing yards. 305 of them. But they only let Houston score 17 points. They did what they had to do, and got the stops they needed to.
  • Defensive Line: The young guys have picked up the mantle. Haye, Hayes, Marks, Brown, Vickerson, Ford, and even Vandenbosch were getting in on the act. This was with Jason Jones out. The D-Line is key to this team, and it looks like they’ve figured out that it’s on them. Tony Brown is a BEAST. They are the key to our defense.
  • Control the Clock: The offense only scored 20 points, but I feel like they played much better than when they played the 1st game. They controlled the clock. Even when they didn’t score, they would pick up a couple 1st downs to flip field position. The offense was big.
  • Vince Young: I will once again be doing my weekly post on his play, so I will keep this to one sentence. His command of the offense is really, really impressive.
  • Chris Johnson: The guy continues to impress every week. He has turned into a true feature back. He got all the tough yards when they needed it. The Texans “contained” him to 5.2 yards a carry. Yeah, I’ll take it. What a beast.
  • Texans Miscues: Missed kicks. Steve Slaton’s drops. Not involving Andre Johnson, the one player the Titans have NO answer for, late in the game. Coaching miscues, player miscues, kicking miscues, they all happened. It’s why the Texans are the Texans. And it helped us win.
