Wait until next year to give Chris Johnson a new contract

February 2nd, 2010 by Rogersworthe | Filed under Tennessee Titans.

Chris Johnson recently told Jim Wyatt this:

“Hopefully they’ll want to give me a new deal. I think I deserve to be the highest paid running back in the league, or even the highest paid offensive player besides the quarterback. But it’s not like I am not going out in the media saying, ‘Pay me, I want a new deal now.’ I am just saying, if they were to pay me, I want that. Hopefully they want that, too.”

While CJ2K has obviously outperformed his rookie contract, the time to reward him with a new one is not after his record setting year. At that point, you would be giving him a contract based on a season he will never duplicate again. The best course of action is to wait to see what his stats add up to this upcoming season and give him a contract based on those numbers.Chances are, the numbers will come back a little bit and it will be the type of production the Titans can expect for a few years to come.

Give it a year, then talk renegotation.
