Earlier this season, I wrote post on why I thought firing Jeff Fisher was patently absurd. Then, the Titans went out and lost in horrible ways, including a 59-0 dismantling by a team I hate more than life itself Chick Flicks. At this point, I did an about face and wrote about how firing Jeff Fisher wasn’t really so absurd anymore. Well, this one is in a totally different tone. It’s not about whether it’s absurd, it’s about whether he can or can’t get fired. And it’s a simple relationship: the more Vince Young wins, the more Jeff Fisher can’t be fired.
Now, logically most people think Jeff Fisher played Kerry Collins 3 weeks too long and that he should be blamed, not commended, for the way he handled the Vince Young – Kerry Collins situation. I tend to blame him for it. I thought Young should’ve taken over after the Jacksonville debacle. Regardless, it doesn’t matter. If Vince Young wins, Jeff Fisher stays.
Why? Why should Fisher have a right to stay if Vince is winning? Well, it isn’t about right. It’s about stability. Vince Young is certainly winning. In the process, he has shown that he now has an amazing grasp of the Mike Heimerdinger offense. He knows the proper reads. He knows the plays. He knows this offense inside and out. He is running it beautifully. By firing Fisher, the Titans risk ALL of this.
Yes, theoretically the Titans can fire Fisher and keep Heimerdinger, but does that ever happen? Do teams ever fire the coach but retain the Offensive Coordinator? Do Offensive Coordinators ever stick around after the coach has been ousted if they aren’t the ones getting the promotion? It never happens. Nor is Heimerdinger Fisher’s replacement of Fisher did get fired. It won’t happen. Besides, I think Heimerdinger is just as responsible, if not moreso, for the 0-6 start.
Also, Jeff Fisher is proving my personal belief that coaching, even in the NFL, is usually vastly overrated, except in that consistency is really important. Regardless of their past, Vince and Jeff are getting along. Fisher has been raving about Young in the media, and Vince has been completely responsive to it. He is enjoying his job, enjoying his life, and likes his coaches. Bud Adams won’t mess with this. Mike Reinfeldt certainly won’t. Young winning games means Fisher is winning games and that means Fisher is staying right here in Nashville.
So, for those who think Fisher deserves to be fired because of how much he screwed up on Vince Young, I’ve got some good news-bad news for you.
Good news: It looks like you’re right. Vince can be a successful NFL Quarterback, and his renewed focus is awesome to watch as he flirts with the playoffs on a team that started 0-6.
Bad news: The more you’re right, the more guaranteed Jeff Fisher is to keep his job.
To steal a line from the great 1945 classic I Accuse My Parents, “The higher Vince Young, the higher Jeff Fisher.” (Yeah, they said that. Seriously.)
And that is what I so creatively call…
The Vince Young-Jeff Fisher Conundrum.

You hate life? I was unaware of this…
Oh, and I liberated France while you were away.
Actually I love life. Definitely not a good barometer to measure my hatred of the Patriots. I was typing fast to try to finish this post and make it to work, and I reverted to a cliche that makes no sense. My bad.
There. Corrected for accuracy.
How it's perfect!
I'm an idiot. *NOW* it's perfect. Sheesh.
