VYVW: Is Vince Young the Quarterback of the Future?

November 3rd, 2009 by Rogersworthe | Filed under Tennessee Titans.

Vince Young looked really, really good yesterday. However, he only threw 18 times and Chris Johnson had a record day. So how much can we look into Vince’s play? Let’s discuss.

Vince did everything he was asked to.

Vince did everything he was asked to.

Vince played exceptionally well against the Jaguars. Except for one pass, he was really accurate and made the correct decision just about every play. On the Nate Washington TD pass alone I saw Vince do things I haven’t ever seen him do before:

  1. Read the defense as tight man coverage.
  2. Highlighted Washington as the guy to go to.
  3. Anticipated the route with the throw.
  4. Threw a fade route PERFECTLY on target.

I seriously don’t recall him doing all of that so well. I’m not saying he hasn’t made great throws or plays, but on this one it was different because it felt and looked like he knew exactly what to do and how to do it. Very impressive. So what does it mean?

It means that the discussion of whether Vince can be the Quarterback of the future is open. These next nine games have a lot of meaning and a lot riding on them. A lot more than a 1-6 team would normally have riding on their final 9 games. However, for him to be declared Quarterback of the Future I need to see consistency but also a some production in some different situations. Here are the things I personally want to see him do before I will become a full believer:

  • Play well when the Running Game is not doing so well.
  • Play well coming from behind and the opposing team knows that the Titans have to throw. Best example will probably be the Indianapolis game. Our defense, despite a better effort against Jacksonville, still sucks. The Jones-Drew touchdowns are a testament to this fact. Manning will probably torch us. I don’t expect a win from Vince in this spot, but I will expect him to keep the game competitive (obviously how bad the defense plays also factors in) and also keep his turnovers to a maximum of one. If he does this, that would be a huge step.
  • Play well with in the 2 minute offense more than once.
  • When he has a bad game, which he more than likely will once, I want to seem him handle it well personally and in the press and to come back the next week and play well. This will reveal a lot about his maturity.
  • I want to see him win one game that he shouldn’t win.

I know this is a lot to ask, but we are talking about do or die time for Vince. He needs to come through big time to justify not drafting a Quarterback with the high pick the Titans will more than likely get.

I’m really hoping he does. I’m also not going to be lenient. The Titans can’t afford to be either.
