Brett Favre is staying retired and Media continues in worship

July 28th, 2009 by Rogersworthe | Filed under Media Failures, Rest of the NFL.

Many reports are coming out now saying that Brett Favre is staying retired. Whatever. Not really a big news story. But the worship of him and defense of him by the Media is continuing on. Already, Chris Mortensen, who I actually like, tweeted (or twatted, however you say it) this: “Yes we have confirmed Brett staying retired. Good decision. Remember without Vikings’ interest, never would have been a story.”

Bullshit.

He is obviously trying to defend Favre pre-emptively with that line that starts with “Remember”. That’s total bullshit, and I fully expect the Favre-loving contingent in the media to take this line. Mortensen, Peter King, Colin Cowherd, everybody else on ESPN, I’m sure a few on NFLN which I don’t get and have never seen. They’ll all take this line. And I am warning you, it’s bullshit.

Don't be fooled. Favre is the master of media manipulation and a gloryhound.

Don't be fooled. Favre is the master of media manipulation and a gloryhound.

Favre was the one who asked for his release from the Jets, even though the Jets could get compensation if someone wanted Favre unless the Jets fully released him. For some inexplicable reason, the Jets acquiesced. THAT is when this became a story. And as of now, we have no proof the Vikes pursued Favre before this moment. If the Vikings pursue Favre and he says “Screw off, I’m retired,” then it is NOT a story for more than a few hours, maybe a whole day if it’s a slow day. But Favre decided to flirt and work out but not show up to anything with the Vikings, he put the Vikings’ awkward head coach Brad Childress in weird situations which he handled poorly but were nontheless because of Favre and his refusal to admit to the story. We then were treated to another Favre watch as we waited for his decision, it was revealed his family had booked hotel rooms in Green Bay the week of the Vikings-Green Bay game. We got false reports of planes landing in Hattiesburgh, MS. We got countless MMQB articles from Peter King where he would say “I won’t talk about Favre,” and then proceed to talk about Favre. It took up several segments over a 3 week period of the Colin Cowherd show. It caused a Twitter war between Biloxijim, a 12th cousin of Brett Favre, and this dearly beloved blog, T-Rac’s Posse. All starting with Favre asking for his release from the Jets.

True, it is possible it was the interest of Minnesota in Favre that caused Favre to ask for his release. But regardless, Favre is the culprit for turning this into a 2 month long story and it comes across to me and many other NFL fans as a sad ploy at attention grabbing. Favre spent most of his career screwing off and getting by on his extraordinary physical talent, and then played up his potential retirement for the last 4 years of his career in what I believe was a ploy to avoid off-season workouts. Then in 2007, his last year in Green Bay he played extremely well and very smartly, and we were treated to 10,000 stories on how “Brett Favre is now playing in the system.” Of course, the media completely ignored how they call that “doing your job” for the rest of the NFL and it is not something to really be commended for. Great play, yes. But praising someone for doing what he should do is stupid and revealed how most of the Main Stream Media pandered to Brett and favored him. When describing the play of Peyton Manning nobody adds “And he does such a good job of playing in the system”. It’s assumed, and it’s assumed because that’s what focused and driven Quarterbacks who strive to maximize their talent and the talen around them do. It reminds me of when people praise Vince Young for watching film during the offseason. He’s supposed to. That shouldn’t be commended, it should be a minimal requirement.

The point being, Brett Favre is the root of this story. He milked it for all it’s worth, and I am fairly certain he did it knowing he wasn’t going to play. It was his last chance to really be the spotlight and he enjoys it in a very childish way, almost the same way Terrell Owens does. He may manifest it and handle it differently than TO, but Favre has the same desire to be glorified.

Minnesota definitely contributed by being interested, but fuck. C’mon. They have Tavaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels as their QBs. They SHOULD be interested. Favre is the culprit for this Media Circus from Hell. Anybody who says otherwise is just doing what they always do, protecting the egotistical gloryhound that is Brett Favre.

  1. I think it should be obvious based on local team blogs like this one, Music City Miracles, and others that people are very fed up with Favre and the way the media chooses to cover it. Why they continue to do so is a mystery to me. I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

    Good post.
