A Few Steps Further

July 27th, 2009 by Lando | Filed under Fantasy Football.

It’s almost August.  Just a few days away, and then we’ll be gearing up for the start of the NFL season.  And with that, comes the start of Fantasy Football.  After writing about my top five picks, I received a few emails from some Posse fans and decided to have my very first Fantasy mailbag.  Enjoy!

Brian, Hendersonville TN:

Hey Lando!

Are any of those Fantasy Football Magazines worth getting, or is it 50 pages of the same thing you can read on ESPN or NFL.com?

I personally think that most of those magazines are a waste of time.  You will essentially read the same garbage over and over again, maybe gleaning one or two helpful hints.  ESPN does a fairly decent job, and NFL.com has great rankings.  But for the bare essentials I would check out tracsposse.com.  That’s just me though.

Robert, Mt. Pleasant TN:

Hey man, I got a question.  I really like your Lesean McCoy pick

Umm…. that’s not a question.  However, he is an excellent handcuff to have for all Brian Westbrook owners.  I had Westbrook last year in a league, and just for safety purposes had Correll Buckhalter on my bench.  Westbrook is very injury prone, and is almost always a game time decision.  So it’d be a good thing to have McCoy in your back pocket.

Nigel, Science Hill TN:

Dude,
I just found out I’ll have the 5th pick in the draft, which sticks me smack dab in the middle of every round. What should be my drafting strategy for the 1st 3 rounds? I was thinking maybe taking a WR with my 1st, a QB with my 2nd and not getting my RB until the 3rd round. What do you think? How should I approach this?

5 isn’t as bad as you think.  You might miss out on a top-tier running back, but that’s not the end of the world.  If you’re thinking of taking a WR in the first round then do it.  Draft who you like, because they probably won’t be there when it comes time for you to pick again.  And you can do the WR, QB, and RB road if you want.  It all depends on who is available and who you like.  You could draft Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald in the first, maybe land Tom Brady or Peyton Manning in the second, and still get a good back by the third.  I think the old strategy of RB/RB in the first two rounds is already outdated.  So take who you like and don’t sweat the fact that you’re in the middle of every round.  Just avoid doing what The Raging Clam did last year by not drafting Dallas Clark in the 3rd round.

  1. Yeah, I am not super high on Brian Westbrook this year. He's getting old for a RB, and I feel he is due for a LT setback type year that LaDanian had last year.
